I was just looking at a friend's modestly funny entry from earlier in the day, which I noticed had received no comments. I didn't think it deserved to be ignored, and went to comment. And drew a blank. And then I suddenly realized what LJ needs:

An 'ACK' button

Just a button that I could have pushed that would tell my friend "Yakshaver read your post and wanted you to know in some vague inarticulate way that he approves."

What d'ya think?

why not just post "ha!" or "I approve"?

I draw a blank all the time, but I interpret that as my cue to think of something equally witty or interesting to say in response.

I think people do make acknowledgements by responding with "lol", which just greatly offends my sense of English. :)

I think the rec system at fool.com works pretty well for this. I'd love to see something similar on lj.

I realized that Facebook has thumbs up and down buttons on posts; thumbs up seemed to be being used in this way when I noticed its existence.

I've heard of leaving just a . as a comment. Also, from the Python community, "+1" if you agree, "-1" to disagree, etc.

Facebook, which is pretty reprehensible, has this as a "Like" button next to the "Comment" which ads a "<Name> likes this" and also ads to that person's stream "<Name> liked <Other Person's> [status|link|photo|etc.]"

I am opposed to any such feature which decreases the quality of actual communications. We have too many of those features already. It's just not that hard to write "I love the way you expressed that idea" or some such.

I agree. There are so many subtly different things you could say:

I agree
Love your artwork
That's funny
Great post
Thanks, you made my day

etc etc

Heh. SF0 has +1 and -1 for comment voting, which I think is excellent, because you can actually award people score for interesting comments and penalize them for comments that are inappropriate or unconstructive. If only real life had such a satisfying community scoring mechanism.
