xelaIn 1957, Dr. Frank Kameny, an astronomer with the US Army Map Service, was fired by the United States Civil Service Commission, on the grounds that the Government "does not hire homosexuals and will not permit their employment...."
Last week, the director of the Civil Service Commission's successor agency, the Office of Personnel Management, apologized.
