stud-finder?

I want to hang a pot rack in the kitchen. I would far rather hang it from eyebolts screwed into ceiling joists than from toggle bolts. My experience with stud-finders on plaster-and-lath walls has been that they are not very useful — but I'm told they've gotten better in recent years. Does anyone have one that in your experience actually works on typical pre-war Camberville construction? If so, I'd like to know the make and model. Or maybe borrow it, if you're willing.

Thanks; I'll take you up on that. I'll be out of town Tues through Thurs this week; that aside I could drop by any time. When would be good for you guys? (Preferably when David is home so I can ask him for pointers.)
