I'm in the midst of watching the real-time reporting on macrumors.com of today's keynote. I am completely blown away by the iPhone. Rumors of it are the reason I'm paying attention to the keynote in real time, something I don't normally bother to do. It is so incredibly much better than the rumors. It runs MacOS. I think the Mac sub-notebook I've been wishing for for close to ten years has finally arrived — and it's far smaller, and far cooler, than I could ever have imagined. I'm in technolove!

[livejournal.com profile] kareila: I won't be buying one as long as it's only available via Cingular.

I reckon they had to partner with a cellular provider. The video-voicemail thing requires special facilities on the provider's network, as I understand it. There was no way they were going to get all the providers to add such support with no proof of demand. Giving one provider a long exclusive on their very cool product lets them get it out there, with network for all the features.

I agree, partnering makes sense - I just wish they hadn't chosen Cingular.

Not that I would get one anyway - too expensive, and I don't need to get online away from home any more. But it is cool.

"Visual Voicemail" isn't video voicemail, it's a visual iPod-like interface to traditional voicemail.

Oh --- so visual voicemail must be the random access interface to your voicemail. Ok. (I still haven't seen the keynote; I followed it real time on macrumours and on zephyr (where other people were summarizing other live coverage, and of course we were all engaged in commentary). As soon as I saw the phrase go by, I triaged visual voicemail as something I wasn't that interested in. But I do remember discussion of the voicemail UI, which sounds excellent, and someone commenting that Cingular had to alter their network to make visual voicemail work. Which I now assume means back-end support for the voicemail UI.)

That's my understanding from the coverage I read on macuser.com, not having viewed the keynote either. I like the idea of the voicemail interface, but it's not a killer app for me.

All I need in a cellphone these days is durability, a good speakerphone, and iSync compatibility. My current phone has all that, so I'll stick with it until it breaks or my needs change.
