I just for the second time in as many months bought coffee at Shaws in Porter. And for the second time in as many months, realized only when I got home that I had forgotten to grind it. I never do this at Whole Foods.

I am tempted to attribute this (geek is a rationalizing animal, after all) to a subconscious aversion to the grinders at Shaws, which are always so grungy that I suspect they've never been cleaned, and which my nose can't help but notice have been used for that sin against nature, flavoured coffee.

A number of my friends swear by getting little electric spice grinders to grind their coffee beans on demand, and only buy whole beans they keep in the freezer. This also had the advantage of protecting their coffee from getting sins against nature on it.

The cold-water process requires that I have an entire pound of ground coffee, and home grinders in which that quantity is workable are mondo expensive.

I remain perennially astonished nobody has commercialized cold-water process coffee. I'd think that bottles of gourmet super-smooth coffee concentrate would be a very popular in the local sort of clientele.
