I had a chance to actually handle a MacBook Air the other day, and all my doubts were swept away. I carry my laptop most of the time these days, and the weight savings would be a godsend. Unfortunately, the price tag plus the fact that my MacBook is less than two years old conspire to make it feel like too much of an indulgence.

But the idea of carrying around several fewer pounds of computer all the time is very appealing. So I want to at least play with an Eee, get a sene of its heft and try typing on one. Does anyone know of a store in the area that carries them in stock?

I found I did eventually get used to the keyboard but the right shift key and the location of the `~ key kind of annoyed me. In the dark it's really hard to find them.

But the real problem is that the screen is just too small. And the cpu is really kind of slow. I can't really see making it my primary machine. I got it to bring on trips. I don't get the impression they're built to be a primary machine either. The warranty and tech support is separate from Asus's normal laptop warranty program and is only for 1yr I think.

I got it from Microbytes, a chain in Canada which seems to have them in stock. But a five hour drive each way is probably not what you had in mind for "the area".

I'm taking my Eeeeeeee on holiday with me, just cos it is so weeeee. I pack light, but the Eeee is sketchbook sized and easy to slip into my carry-on-the-plane bag.

The keyboard is a bit small, (tricky when my nails get really long,) and text on the screen is a bit on the small side so if your eyesight is shady it might annoy you, so worth trying it first if you can.

But otherwise, these are minor inconveniences compared to being able to take a PC round with you 24-7!

Where you might find one - no idea, in the UK they're really hard to source.

I should add, I don't expect to use my Eeeee for anything more complex than blogging, shopping, answering emails on the hoof and running powerpoint presentations for work. (The presentations would natch have been created on my "big" computer, the Eee is just for carting about.)

You probably want to check eeeuser.com for a lot more info. Personally, I reinstalled mine with EeeDora instead of the defaul Xandros. Also, portable DVD player cases are just the right size.

I was slightly surprised to see one on the shelf at BJ's in Medford. The 2Gig model though, but it'll let you see the form factor firsthand.
