The woman in the downstairs apartment, who I've spoken with exactly once before, just knocked on the door and asked if I'd be willing to move her car across the street while she's out of town next week.¹ And then handed me the key to her rather nice sports car.

¹ In Somerville, the streets are swept every other week; on our street, it's odd side (where we live) Tuesdays, even side (where she's currently parked) Wednesdays.

Hmm. I'm a little surprised she didn't say "could you stop dropping piles of lumber on the floor" but I guess you lucked out that it wasn't "can you wash my cat"

does somerville tow when you're parked illegally? when i last lived in somerville (1998), it was just a $15 fine, and my street had only one side where i could park, so i just left early on street sweeping mornings. about half the time, i decided the extra sleep was worth $15.

Somerville just tickets. They're fairly stern about making you pay up your tickets before renewing your resident parking sticker. I consider the occasional ticket part of the operating cost of owning a car in the city, but I'd rather avoid them if I can.

In the winter, if they declare a snow emergency, you can only park on the odd numbered side of the street. However, you can also park in municipal lots and school lots. However again, you'd better get there early, or you're walking a ways back home.

Somerville has a good handle on communicating these things. It's announced on their web page and on 311, the info line. Also you can subscribe to have email notifications sent to you. Also they often use an automated dialling system to alert people to things like this, and things like which streets are closed during the Memorial Day Parade.

I hadn't realized you'd moved to Somerville. Welcome to the neighborhood!
