Wow, was the chess game done with, y'know, old-fashioned clay and stop-motion?

That's a lot of work, unless I'm missing how they made it easier.

I think it was just a ton of work. motodraconis, who I got the link from, teaches animation at a British university. She referred to it as "wonderful stop motion" — which I reckon is both an aesthetic judgment and a correct technical description.
