Every few months, I catch up on jwz's LJ. If you follow it, you've these already.

Bonus question: Is there a way to have someone's LJ appear on your friends page without actually friending them? Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer to only friend people I have an actual (even if only online) bilateral relationship with.

If I want to read a journal without friending it, I follow its RSS feed in my feed reader.

Yeah; I follow <lj user="jwz" and a few other people on bloglines. But I'm not in the habit of looking at my rss feeds daily, and when I do, I usually only catch up on one or two. Which is how I came to be skimming something like four months of Jamie's LJ entries today. So while I was pretty sure the answer to my question was no, I figured it was worth asking.

Ah, well, I suppose it also helps to note that I follow my LJ friends page through my RSS reader. Among other things, I've subscribed it to a script that logs in and gets an RSS-styled version of the friends page with locked entries. I just hate browsing around looking for things to read, when they make perfectly good tools for that.

I just created a custom friends group that I could filter posts to. That doesn't fix the overloading of the term "friend", and there are some LJ things that you can only filter to nobody/friends/everybody (mostly fields on the profile page), but it works okay for me.

With 20-20 hindsight, that's clearly the way to go. But by the time I realized that, I had something like a four-year backlog of friendslocked posts I'd want to relock to that narrower filter. LJ needs batch processing....

...I wander through the friends' page of sca and other costuming/sca communities pretty much daily, and see yours regularly, as well as many others who appear to say intimate stuff which I don't read because it's not my beeswax...but yup, I think that's a giant giant loophole right there...

Are you saying you see people's friendslocked posts that way? Because if so, that's a bug in LJ's software.

...I genuinely have no idea which ones are friendslocked or not, but have seen numerous people complain about others seeing their posts and stating that they are mystified on the subject, and I have seen countless ones about private matters clearly displayed to anyone browsing, but didn't look to see if they might be friendslocked or not...maybe that little lock device would show, but I have not looked for it...but I think that having posts show up in groups that have been 'friended' may indeed be some sort of bug worth investigating, just for peace of mind of those with that question...if I find out, I'll tell you, or you can look for yourself in some communities...
