When I was younger, box wines were always a joke. But I'm given to understand that these days, some pretty decent wines come packaged that way  and that, since the wine is in a plastic bladder that deflates as it's used, a lot less air gets to it after it's opened, and it therefore stays drinkable a lot longer. Since I typically waste half of every bottle of wine I open, this is a very appealing idea.

So: have you tried box wines? Any you recommend?

C and I like Black Box. It took 2-3 weeks to go to vinegar in the fridge.

No. They're all terrible. I've tried this for several years at Burning Man and even the "expensive" ($20/box) ones are terrible. The Black Box someone else recommended was the best of the bunch, but that's not saying much.

I wish I could get the Ravenswood Zinfandel in a 3L box. It'd be the same price (a 750ml bottle is $9 at Costco, and the glass costs them a fair amount), and wouldn't suck.

To clarify, none of the box wines are fine wines, and the reds are all painful. If you like (ugh) white zinfandel then they're just fine. Or if you go with the boxed "sangria" it's perfectly drinkable. But they're basically wine coolers in boxes, so...

just buy a vacuvin, and continue enjoying wine half a bottle at a time. i routinely drink a bottle of wine over the course of three days. open, pour, vacuvin, and immediately back in the fridge, and white will last 3-4 days, and red as much as a week.

I have a vacuvin. The problem is, I'm not likely to be in the mood for a glass of wine more than once or twice a week. And even with a vacuvin, that gives lots of air lots of time to interact with the wine.

yeah, that's a bit long.. of course, this means a box of wine would last what, three months?

i once visited a winery that offered a tasting of their box wine, but it was more of a novelty than anything -- look, we made a box wine that's actually *drinkable*! but, like bud light's advertising people, we couldn't come up with anything better than that to say about it..

I would agree with most, that current vintages of boxed wine suck. However, I understand that the actual packaging is being explored by more traditional wineries for the same reasons of preservation...

I have the poster you wanted! (Sorry it's so late, no idea when it arrived as, um, I found it while sorting through my pile of "junk" mail, it was concealed by arriving in the post with a magazine - which threw me!)

So, can you PM me your address and I'll post it to you? Cheers!
