Another buried tab I just finally got around to reading (I'm afraid I don't remember who turned me on to this one). It seems there's pretty solid evidence that the early Christian Church celebrated same-sex unions, including at least one between two saints. When Same-Sex Marriage was a Christian Rite.

It's interesting, but it's my impression that it's *always* John Boswell who finds this stuff. Is he the only one doing the research, or is he reading something into old documents that isn't really there?

I asked my mother (a Medievalist) for a sniff-test on that (because I was also fascinated) and she suggests that there's a lot of room for interpretation in all the evidence: how much the celebrated love relates to sex; the exact meanings of various words for uncleanness; interpretation of iconography.

She also has a 12th century citation for strongly homophobic writings.
