Well, I'm off in a few minutes to my first cataract operation. On my left eye, the one that, however good the lens, I'm unlikely to ever see well enough out of to be able to read with it: I have amblyopia, which basically means that optic nerve never fully developed when I was little. I'm doing that eye first so as to go through the process once, learning all the little weirdnesses it entails, without having to also be functionally blind for ... a few days? weeks? ... as part of the bargain.

Jan wished me luck last night, and I babbled at him for a good five minutes in a manner that might also be described as perky. I am way more nervous about this than I want to let myself know.

Thank you. Turns out I need to spend less time looking at computer screens and books right now than I want to. This will pass, but it may interfere with my keeping y'all posted.

Obviously recovery takes much higher precedence over keeping us posted. Feel free to call if you're ever bored and need a non-books/Internet distraction.

Thank you. At this point, my luck is holding up exceedingly well. (Touch wood!)

As for yikes!: That pretty much hits the nail on the head:
The scene: Early January, 2010; Offices of Dr. H and Dr. R. Dr H became my new ophthalmologist in 2008, when my old one moved to Newton. I'd only seen Dr H that one time, and found him rather unpleasant. But my PCP, who I generally trust, goes to Dr H himself and thinks he's super competent, so I was willing to put up with him. Still, when I called for my every-two-year exam and found out he had a new partner, I was glad to see the new guy instead.

Dr. R, after examining me: Well, you know you have cataracts....

Me: I what?!?

Dr R: Dr. H found them last time you were here...

Me: News to me.

Dr R: mumbles indistinctly, then proceeds to tell me about my cataracts, how they're different from normal old-person cataracts and; tend to strike younger people and are associated with certain risk factors....

Me: Attempts desperately to ask intelligent questions while internally going WTF?!?
