It is truly weird to be sitting at Whole Foods having breakfast & have a chill run up your spine as the musak suddenly launches into the opening bars of Patty Smith's "Because the Night." A song that left me staring at the radio with my jaw around my knees when I first heard it at 19, and still clutches at something deeply inarticulate inside me. how the hell did this become music to shop by?

Same way the Beatles' "Revolution" became music to sell Nikes to: because someone sold the rights for $$$. That doesn't mean I have to like it, though.

Barbarians! Philistines! That song is incandescent when she does it, and it deserves better.
