Peter Alway plays his Lego dulcimer.

I heard about this on NPR and had to chase down the details, including instructions for making your own.

Is this not cool?

Weird, clicking that link crashes my Safari every time. It seems to work better when I replace ftp with http though.

That is incredibly weird. I also see a ftp url in the ... minibuffer, for lack of a handier word ... when I hover my mouse pointer over the link (both in Safari and Firefox). In the email version of your comment, the quoted original begins:

> <p><img src=3D"http://members.aol.com/petealway/Lego-playing.jpg"><br>Pet=
er
> Alway plays his Lego dulcimer. </p>

When I went to edit the entry on LJ, thinking maybe I'd accidentally pasted in a non-printing character that was causing the odd behaviour, what I saw was:

<p><img src="http://members.aol.com/petealway/Lego-playing.jpg"><br>Peter Alway plays his Lego dulcimer. </p>

I edited it anyway, hand re-typing the "h t t p : / / m e m" part; it still shows up as an ftp url when I hover my mouse over it. I'm stumped, and have an appointment to get to.

Hrm, I'll bet AOL had a problem with bandwidth use or something dumb, traceable to LJ via http referers. So LJ automatically converts all AOL URLs from http to ftp to avoid sending referer data. And Safari is just not very good at ftp. Bah.

I have replaced the aol url with an ln-s.net url pointing to it.
Pats self on back for clever kluge.

Yes, well, that's not the part that [livejournal.com profile] kareila was referring to -- the embedded image, which appears on her friends page, uses an ftp:// url and still crashes Safari. Neat kludge, though.

Oh. I'm pretty sure I sucessfully looked at the entry in Safari. Anyway, that's fixed now too.

Hey, That's me!

I've seen that ftp-ization of http URL's other times in LJ links. I think it did happen when was referring to images or pages on AOL, but I figured it was an LJ weirdness, rather than an AOL weirdness. I reached the point where if I put a URL in a tag on my LJ, I also add the URL by itself. So for instance I'd link to my Lego Dulcimer page just by posting the URL by itself:

http://members.aol.com/petealway/Lego-dulcimer.htm

And that should work fine.

OK, I confess I was doing a vanity Google search of "lego dulcimer" today just to see how it had propogated around. I'm glad you and a couple of your LJ freinds found it amusing.
