One of the things we learned on my home visit last Thursday is that I own no suitable chairs. None. Zilch. Zero.

Suitable in this context meaning

  1. with armrests sturdy enough to help one get in and out
  2. with a seat high enough to keep me from bending more than 90°at the waist-------- i.e. at lease 22 inches.
Basically, chairs like the one on the right (though solid wood, sans upholstery, would suit me just as well.)

Astute observers may be thinking no way that chair seat's 22+ inches off the floor. And they would be correct. It's mostly there to provide an example of the sort of chair I need.

But I also suspect that chairs that actually meet requirement #2 are hard to find. So I have a workaround: I have some bed risers, which turned out not to be useful for my bed, but would certainly prove sufficient to increase the seat height of any otherwise suitable chair.

So, to cut to the chase, does anyone have one or more such chairs they'd be willing to lend me for a month?

Thanks in advance!

I've got an aluminum bar stool, with solid metal arms and a 29.5" high seat, that I can drop off. Pictures at <http://www.wayfair.com/modway-perch-29.5-barstool-eei-851-fow1314.html>.

It's light, and i worry it might be *too* high. But if it'll help it's all yours.

My guess is that is too high, for both placement of leg and center of gravity issues. But of course [livejournal.com profile] yakshaver gets the final say.

Yes. thank you. I have my doubts — Meg expressed some of them — but the only way to resolve them will be to try it. And if they resolve in its favor, it seems likely to be far more suitable as a perch in the kitchen (where space is at a premium) than the sort of thing I originally had in mind.

Have you considered office chairs? Some of the padded ones are comfortable (eg the one I'm sitting on right now - I wrote my PhD thesis from this Chair of Parasitology), many swivel around a base, many are of adjustable height and many have small, lockable wheels. Another of this type is my kitchen chair, letting me move eg between table and fridge without standing up.

If somebody lends you a wheelchair, of the correct height and width, you'll be able to lock its wheels. Also to use it for moving around. If your table or desk doesn't have impediments you'll be able to work, read and eat while in the wheelchair.

My wheelchair is truly comfortable because it fits me. A technician measured me for it, using a ruler, which is how come I know the lengths of my bent limbs and the width of my bum.

After sitting in it for a few hours I like to put my feet up on another chair. It makes me laugh gently when anybody invites me to 'take a seat over there', offering a fits-all chair like the one in your picture. If in doubt, ask a disabled person.

I will in fact be coming home with a wheelchair that fits me well. Which means I'll only be able to use it in my livingroom and diningroom — it certainly won't fit through any of the doorways. But those are two of the three places I was hoping to put q suitable chair when I initially wrote this, so will serve adequately. The only downside is that I'd hoped to be able to return it sooner.

Hmm. My folding 2-step step stool is also a chair. You may have a similar stool. The seat is 20 inches. No arm rests, but there are arm rest like things. Very stable, but no padding in the seat.
I saw a guy on a plane from nowhere Canada going to a city to get a hip replacement. He was carrying a seat sized 3 inch slab of foam insulation, which he said the hospital had recommended he bring along in order to convert normal height chairs to taller chairs.

Was it memory foam? I sit and sleep on that.

This fellow's cushion looked like a slab of construction insulation (blue with logos), but I didn't look too closely. Sounded like he needed something rigid rather than comfortable. I would imagine that memory foam is much more comfortable for long term use.
