Google, the all knowing, the all seeing

Every once in a while I search for something on Google expecting no hits It has been several years since that expectation was correct, and I think I'm just going to stop ever making that assumption. What prompted this? Searching on borosilicate "coffee mug". I thought i'd have to use a trademark or a less technical term. Silly me.

We just started using bodum's borosilicate espresso cups. They're great for bragging about who can pull more crema. They do feel awfully thin, though. Amazon's reviews seem to categorize the little ones as great, and the big ones as great until they inevitably explode.

In the category of things you wouldn't expect to know, unless you're in a particular subgroup, then everyone knows it:

I never heard borosilicate glass referred to as anything other than pyrex until I started making lampwork glass beads. I'm using soft glass, specifically soda-lime glass, which is the kind of stuff that's been made since Egyptian times. However, many beadmakers, and makers of anything where heat tolerance and shock resistance is important (pipemakers, body jewelry, etc.) use borosilicate glass, and refer to it that way.

Corning doesn't make borosilicate glass intended for lampwork (i.e., in rod form and different colors), so they don't use Pyrex brand. Northstar is one brand, and Glass Alchemy something is the other, I think.

Cups and goblets are well within the kinds of things that can be made using lampwork techniques, so I'm not actually surprised your search terms turned up something.
