graphic of countries that don't use the metric system

I picked up a copy of Good Magazine at Whole Foods the other day; if you're interested in how design can make the world a better place, I recommend browsing the web site, which seems to have much or all of the magazine's content. The image above seemed to me especially eye-catching; click on it to see the much larger original graphic.

Design is something I've been interested in since I was a teenager. It seems to have emerged from the same cultural impulse that created the fashion industry and the celebrity architect — hardly a promising genesis. But it's gained a certain amount of intellectual seriousness (though not, unfortunately, without at least an equal dose of pretentiousness), and there are now a fair number of smart people thinking about design as a way to make the world a better place. I am very much an observer from the sidelines, and so far my impression is that Good is a good way to get a few glimpses of what's going on in that field.

That's a bit disingenuous though. The UK is on the metric system for some things, but the beer still comes in pints, people are still weighed in pounds (or stone), and the roads are still measured in miles.

And Americans always look amazed and shocked when you tell them this. ;)

Though, as a point of information, the US pint is different from the UK pint. It's smaller. So you always feel shortchanged at the bar.

Unless you go to Christopher's in Porter Square, where you can order a "small pint" or a "large pint" of beer. (At least, you could 4 years ago.) Maybe they had a Brit on the bar staff or something.
